Our Story
I met Emily in our 12th-grade algebra class. Despite sharing a class together, we rarely spoke to each other. Throughout the school year, I occasionally offered Emily pieces of cinnamon-spiced gum (which I later learned was not her favorite flavor). And sometimes, Emily would be kind enough to let me copy her math homework when I was feeling lazy (we still debate who’s better at math). It wasn’t until the last day of school, on Senior Skip Day, that I heard Emily’s contagious laugh and finally noticed her beautiful smile. She took a chance on me, and we decided to spend (or skip) the day together. Emily and I went to Luby’s that afternoon and ordered chicken fried chicken with a side of macaroni and cheese. We didn’t know each other too well at the time, but I remember laughing so much that I didn’t want to stop hanging out with her. Even though high school came to an end, we began dating in the summer of 2013. After three dates, I knew in my heart Emily was the one for me. I wanted to make our relationship official, but Emily, on the other hand, needed more time. By that point, I didn’t want to lose her, so we continued spending time together over the next three months, becoming more and more serious. While I was preparing to study nursing in San Antonio, Emily decided to stay in our hometown of Harlingen to attend college for dietetics. We both understood that being in a long-distance relationship would be a challenge, but we also didn’t want that to stop us from being together. On our last date before leaving for college, I asked Emily once again to be my girlfriend, to which she wholeheartedly accepted. Fast forward to 2020, I got down on one knee and asked Emily yet another important question, to spend the rest of our lives together as husband and wife. Best decision I ever made.
